Programme: Friday 3rd November

Conflict Reporting…..’the first draft of history’……does anyone care?

This illustrated talk focuses on the changing role of the ‘war’ reporter from WW2 up to the modern day.

I’ll include a conflict showcase of footage captured in September 1973 by UPITN teams across the globe.

UPITN was a major global television news agency. It had an extensive network of foreign bureaux, with crews filming events and people to supply broadcast news companies with material.  In the 1970s, along with Visnews, it was the key player in international newsgathering, providing content that has informed our collective visual memory of that era.

You will view ‘the news ‘as it was filmed, not as broadcast‘ including raw footage from Cambodia Highway 4, Chile’s President Allende and Victoria Station bomb blast.

Conflicts across the world compete for space in our news feeds, channels and platforms…….do the sacrifices made by modern day ‘war’ reporters to bring us these stories actually change/shape/ influence public opinion and the actions of policy makers?
